How to Stay Strong Through Tough Times
Mar 30, 2025Opening: The Strength You Need is Already Inside You
Life isn’t always easy. At some point, we all face setbacks, disappointments, or moments of uncertainty. Maybe you’re going through a career setback, dealing with a personal loss, or simply feeling overwhelmed by everything on your plate.
When tough times hit, it’s easy to feel like giving up. But here’s what I want you to know:
You are stronger than you think.
Resilience isn’t about avoiding difficulties—it’s about learning how to navigate them with strength, confidence, and purpose. It’s about tapping into the inner strength you already have and choosing to move forward, even when it feels hard.
No matter what challenge you’re facing, there are strategies you can use to stay strong, overcome obstacles, and come out stronger on the other side. Let’s dive in.
Accept That Tough Times Are Part of Growth
One of the biggest mistakes we make when we’re struggling is resisting the challenge—wishing it wasn’t happening, hoping it will just go away, or feeling stuck in frustration.
But here’s the truth: Difficult moments are part of life, and they can also be part of growth.
Think back to a time when you overcame something difficult. Maybe you lost a job, ended a relationship, or dealt with a personal setback. At the time, it felt like the worst thing ever—but looking back, you grew from it.
Every challenge teaches you something. It strengthens your resilience, builds your character, and shapes you into the person you’re meant to become.
Action Step:
Write down one challenge you’ve overcome in the past and reflect on what you learned from it.
- How did you grow from that experience?
- What strengths did you develop as a result?
- How did it shape you into who you are today?
When you recognize that tough times aren’t permanent—but the strength you build from them is— it shifts your perspective.
Create a Personal Resilience Routine
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about building habits that help you stay strong in the first place.
Just like you build muscle through regular exercise, you build emotional and mental strength through daily resilience practices.
Here are three simple habits you can start today to build a resilience routine:
- Gratitude Practice – Every morning, write down three things you’re grateful for. This helps shift your focus from what’s wrong to what’s still good in your life.
- Daily Self-Compassion – Talk to yourself with kindness. Instead of saying, “I’m failing” or “I can’t do this,” replace it with “I am capable. I am strong. I will get through this.”
- Mindfulness & Deep Breathing – Take 5 minutes a day to slow down, breathe deeply, and calm your nervous system.
Action Step:
Choose one resilience-building habit from the list above and commit to doing it for the next seven days.
Focus on What You CAN Control
When life feels overwhelming, it’s often because we’re focusing on things we have no control over.
You can’t control what other people say or do.
You can’t control unexpected setbacks.
You can’t control the past.
But what you can control is how you respond.
Resilient people don’t waste energy on what’s out of their hands. Instead, they focus on what’s within their power to change, adjust, or improve.
Action Step:
Grab a notebook and make a T-chart with two columns:
- Things I CAN Control (e.g., my mindset, my actions, my attitude)
- Things I CANNOT Control (e.g., other people’s opinions, past mistakes, outside circumstances)
Spend your energy only on the first column.
Final Thoughts: Resilience is a Choice
You don’t have to wait for life to get easier to start feeling stronger. You can build resilience today—right now—by choosing to focus on growth, control what you can, and build habits that support your strength.
